Facebook announced the launch of “Facebook Newswire” today, a service that “will make it easier for journalists and newsrooms to find, share and embed newsworthy content from Facebook in the media they produce.”
This makes a lot of sense for Facebook and I am sure Twitter will follow up with its own similar news product as so many stories are broken on Twitter way before they make it to the mainstream press.
What I also liked about Facebook’s product is that they claim that Newswire will be “powered by Storyful, the leader in social content discovery and verification for newsrooms.” I like the emphasis put on verification because for every news story broken on social media there has been at least one that has turned out to be fake. Storyful’s verification technology is a very smart and essential addition to the product offering.
That verification technology coupled with with Facebook’s very wide range of sources (both verified and random sources who happened to be at the right place at the right time) can result in the fastest breaking news on the planet.
